The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays. I love spending time with family, enjoying a backyard barbecue, and watching the fireworks light up the sky.
For many of our dogs, though, the experience can feel very different. Loud noises, unexpected fireworks, and changes in routine can make the evening overwhelming.
Every dog is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. These aren't rules—they're simply the little things I've learned over the years that help Togo feel more comfortable when fireworks are part of the celebration.
I hope they give you a few ideas to help your own pup have a safe, cozy, and happy holiday.
1. Create a Cozy, Familiar Space
One of the first things I do is make sure Togo has his favorite spot ready before the evening begins.
His blanket has become part of his daily routine. He sleeps with it every night, and if it's not there, he actually has a hard time settling down. Having something familiar nearby helps keep his bedtime routine feeling normal, even when everything outside sounds different.
2. Turn On Some Background Music
Before the fireworks begin, I like to turn on soft background music or a movie.
The goal isn't to completely block out the outside noise, but to make the house feel calm and familiar. It becomes part of our normal evening routine, and Togo usually settles right in beside me.
3. Get Outside Before It Gets Dark
One thing that always helps is getting outside before the evening gets busy.
A walk gives both Togo and Bruno a chance to burn some energy, explore, and enjoy time together before everyone starts celebrating. By the time we're back home, they're usually much more ready to relax.
4. Keep Their Mind Busy
Interactive toys are one of my favorite ways to keep Togo engaged.
I love filling them with Bitty Joy or Cheesy Bites because it gives him something fun to work on while we're relaxing together. Keeping his mind busy helps make the evening feel like another normal night at home.
5. Stay Close
Sometimes the best thing I can do is simply stay close.
Whether we're watching a movie, sitting on the floor together, or just relaxing in the living room, I like making sure Togo knows he's not alone. Those quiet moments together are often my favorite part of the evening.
Every dog is different, and every family has their own traditions.
These are simply the things that have become part of ours over the years. I hope they inspire you to create a calm, comfortable evening for your own pup this Fourth of July.
